Portland Groove Collective
The Portland Groove Collective presents their debut album of all original Jazz Rock, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban-based rhythm music that flows from funk to mambo to Bossa and beyond. Influences range from the relaxed and clear melodies of Antonio Carlos Jobim, to the experimentation and Latin-funk of Weather Report, to the precise arrangements and chordal labyrinths of Steely Dan. LES GRAY – saxophone, CHRISTIAN BOTTO – guitar, MICHAEL KORA – drums, GRADY McKENZIE – bass, MILLEDGE BENNETT – percussion.
RaChiChi combines the powerful rhythm section of an award-winning former blues band with a classical pianist to create their innovative lush sounds. A Port Townsend, WA, critic had this to say about their music: "This unusual trio has an amazing amount of fun playing jazz that edges lushy pop, blues and cinema. Made up of both jazz and blues players, RaChiChi is lively and fun, sultry and inventive...a new progressive style with old favorites and original inventions. They call it jazz, but 'lushy jazz' with a great blues feel too."

Sonic Light Brigade
Sonic Light Brigade is a folk-rock quartet that specializes in what they call the music that shaped the sounds of today. “That means the tunes that created the pop sounds people know and love today,” says band member Lou Marzeles. “During our sets you’ll hear well-known hits from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and other eras. We play them because they’re the foundational music that established the trends and patterns for hits today.” The band isn’t about “oldies,” especially given that half the band is in their 20s and love the music they play. “It’s about melody, harmony, rhythm, fun—by all means fun—the sound and spirit of being in a great groove together.” And when Marzeles and other band members Leslie Geatches, Aaron Israel, and Meagen Moody perform, they include their audience in that groove. www.SonicLightBrigade.com

Naomi LaViolette
Naomi LaViolette, songwriter, pianist, and vocalist, has found an acoustic niche between the worlds of folk singersongwriter and jazz soulstress. Her music takes two parts Sarah McLachlan, one part Joni Mitchell, and adds a dash of Madeleine Peyroux’s understated elegance for a concoction that is extremely palatable and sweet, with an edge.LaViolette’s music strikes a distinctive balance between a variety of musical styles and soul-filled honesty. Her roots are deep in classical music, with a master’s degree in classical piano performance. She’s immersed herself in jazz standards, folk songs, soul, pop and gospel music. All these influences weave in and throughout LaViolette’s songs, creating a musical vibe that is both vintage and current at the same time. www.naomilmusic.com

Michael Winkle
Just when you’re sure that the male of the species has virtually disappeared from the realm of quality jazz/pop singing, along comes Michael Winkle to set your mind at ease. Michael’s CD is a mixed bag of proven standards (“You Make Me Feel So Young,” “Blame It On My Youth,” “Summertime” and perhaps my favorite cut on the album, “If I Only Had A Heart”). But he also covers some pop things from the past in “Fool On The Hill” and “Crazy Love” among others.. Michael Winkle manages to straddle the line between pop and jazz without ever losing his balance.
George Fendel, Oregon Jazz Scene
"For my money Mike is Portland's finest male jazz singer. After successful performances of the Chet Baker songbook and Mike's own show entitled "Under The Influence" where he sings everything from Do-Wop to Van Morrison, I'm very excited to hear his treatment of the Frank Sinatra songbook. This night will be a great night of vocal with some of the best songs ever written." Tony Starlight
Jesse Meade is a singer-songwriter now living in Eugene, Oregon. He accompanies himself with his own finger-style, acoustic guitar playing while performing both original material and an array of cover songs. His influences include musicians like Ray Charles, Hank Williams, Chuck Willis, Elizabeth Cotten, Otis Redding, Jimmie Rodgers, Aretha Franklin, Percy Mayfield, John Hurt, Sam Cooke, Patsy Cline, Fats Domino, and Dinah Washington. Currently he is performing all over the Northwest while also writing and recording new music. www.jessemeade.com

EARTH, WIND & FIRE
Saturday July 21 – 7:00 p.m.
Gates open 5:30
Tasting Room and Grounds closed 4:00 - 5:30.
During the 1970s, a new brand of pop music was born - one that was steeped in African and African-American styles - particularly jazz and R&B but appealed to a broader cross-section of the listening public. As founder and leader of the band Earth, Wind & Fire, Maurice White not only embraced but also helped bring about this evolution of pop, which bridged the gap that has often separated the musical tastes of black and white America. It certainly was successful, as EWF combined high-caliber musicianship, wide-ranging musical genre eclecticism, and '70s multicultural spiritualism. "I wanted to do something that hadn't been done before," Maurice explains. "Although we were basically jazz musicians, we played soul, funk, gospel, blues, jazz, rock and dance music...which somehow ended up becoming pop. We were coming out of a decade of experimentation, mind expansion and cosmic awareness. I wanted our music to convey messages of universal love and harmony without force-feeding listeners' spiritual content." Earth, Wind & Fire kept recording and in 1996 released Avatar and Greatest Hits Live; followed by 1997's In The Name Of Love; 2002's That's The Way Of The World: Alive In '75; Live In Rio which was recorded during their 1979 "I Am World Tour;" 2003's The Promise, which included the Grammy-nominated "Hold Me" and 2005's Illumination, which included the Grammy-nominated "Show Me The Way."

Yes, after more than a quarter of a century into his career, Chris Isaak has finally created the album he's always wanted to make. Beyond the Sun, Isaak's first Vanguard Records release out Oct. 18 2011 —is truly a labor of love. As a child spinning his parents 45s in their Stockton, California home, this deeply committed artist has been obsessed with the glory days of Memphis' Sun Studio and the visionary artists who got their starts there—including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis—all of them discovered and nurtured by the late, great Sun Records founder Sam Phillips. Now, at long last, Isaak has acted on this lifelong obsession, magically recapturing the transformative hepcat brilliance of the classic sides cut by these greats at Sun with Phillips during the mid-'50s, while also getting down to the heart and soul of his own deeply rooted musical identity. Beyond the Sun is available as both the 14-song standard set as well as a double album version that includes an additional 11 tracks. "I did this because I love this music—that's the entire reason," Isaak explains, advising, "you gotta listen to the original ones—they're classics – they're awesome but you can have fun with them. These guys discovered this music for us and we had to rediscover it. There's no way to do it exactly like they did it, so you've gotta give a little bit of your own take on it." Considering how unmistakably Isaak's own music has been inspired by that of the Sun greats, particularly Presley and Orbison, the obvious question is, what took him so long? "When I started making music, I thought that if I do those songs, where do I go from there?" he says. "I wanted to make sure I found my own sound and established who I was. But I always loved that music and I wrote songs in that spirit. You can go through all my songs and you won't find one reference to goin' to the bop. They're about my life, not about nostalgia for the '50s. I came to a point where I felt like the time was right to do this record. I'd met all my heroes and worked with most of them, and I didn't hear anybody else doing it the way I wanted to do it."

Alison Krauss’ most recent triumph, the certified-platinum Raising Sand, her 2007 collaboration with Robert Plant and producer T Bone Burnett, notched up a total of six Grammy® Awards, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year, bringing her unsurpassed total to 26. That mesmerizing modern-day masterpiece sets the stage for another stunner: Paper Airplane, the artist’s first album of all-new recordings in partnership with her remarkably skillful and renowned band Union Station since 2004’s Lonely Runs Both Ways. The players—Jerry Douglas (Dobro, lap steel, vocals), Dan Tyminski (guitar, mandolin, lead vocal), Ron Block (banjo, guitar) and Barry Bales (bass, vocals), with Krauss on lead vocal and fiddle—are five distinct personalities who come together to form something truly unique as a band. Each bandmate has his own bustling career, but when these singular musicians come together, they’re an airtight unit devoted to the process of making music together. Indeed, their connection is so close and deep that they’ve come to think of each other as family. Produced by Krauss and Union Station, with studio legend Mike Shipley engineering and mixing, Paper Airplane contains 11 songs of poignancy and austere beauty, chosen with the impeccable taste and unerring intuition that have characterized her entire body of work, delivered by this world-class unit with an immediacy that goes beyond mere virtuosity. On Paper Airplane, she and the band somehow managed to plumb the depths of Krauss’ own psyche while also capturing the zeitgeist, so that this portrait of the artist doubles as a portrait of America as a whole at a crucial moment in its history. “I feel like this is the best environment for me,” she says of working within the context of the band. Proof of that simple but telling statement resonates from every note of this musically exquisite, emotionally charged and, above all, utterly truthful album.

In 1978 Huey was playing at Uncle Charlie's, a club in Corte Madera, California, doing the 'Monday Night Live' spot, along with future News men. After recording the song 'Exo-Disco' (a disco version of the theme from the film 'Exodus') Huey got a 'singles contract' from Phonogram Records, and Bob Brown became Manager. Members of a jazz-funk band called Soundhole, which had been a rival band of Clover, were recruited for the band. They included: Johnny Colla (sax/guitar), Bill Gibson (percussion), and Mario Cipollina (bass guitar). These musicians, along with Huey (lead vocals) and Sean (keyboards), only left room for a lead guitarist. For that task Huey wooed Chris Hayes, a brother to gifted San Francisco performer Bonnie Hayes. By this time (1979), there was a band and a recording contract, but no name. They originally called themselves Huey Lewis and the American Express. After further consideration of this name, they changed their name again to Huey Lewis and the News (HLN).
At the beginning of 1980, HLN got a record deal with Chrysalis records and released their self-titled debut album. It was soon followed by Picture This which featured their first top 10 hit, "Do you Believe in Love." This album remained on the Billboard charts for 35 weeks and peaked at #13. By this time, the band had appeared on shows such as "Fridays," "Solid Gold," and "American Bandstand." In late 1982, their record label delayed the release of their third album, putting HLN back to square one. They then went out on a bus tour of small clubs. Shortly after this, Sports was released. In June 1984 the album hit #1 on the Billboard Charts! HLN continued to tour extensively, often setting attendance records in cities, and collecting the perks and awards that are attached to a million-selling, #1 album. In fact, they opened the 1985 Grammy Awards with "The Heart of Rock and Roll." In October 1985, Sports was certified multiplatinum in the US and Canada, silver in the UK, and gold in Australia. A few months later, the album went gold in Japan as well. "The Power of Love" written for the movie Back to the Future, became the band's first #1 song and was even nominated for an Oscar. Also in 1985, the band participated in the USA for Africa recording of "We are the World." The band also picked up several American Music Awards for their talents!
